Deerhurst received approval yesterday to redevelop the area around the Lakeside Lodge with a new building that will hold up to 173 accomdation units. The move by Skyline, owners of Deerhurst addresses a shortage in accommodation at the resort which affects their ability to attract conventions to the area.
The development plans were challenged by the Pen Lake Assoication, citing the building would break the tree line and look like a wall from across the lake.
In the plan, the old buildings at the Lakeside will be demolished and replaced with a 5 storey building. The design presented to council was challenged by Councillor Withey, who noted that the plans were un-inspiring and asked Skyline to come back with something “more iconic, less belligerent”.
