Council Holds Open Meeting To Discuss Electoral Changes

Council Holds Open Meeting To Discuss Electoral Changes

Huntsville Town Council will be holding a second meeting open to the public to discuss the current ward boundary system and council composition.

Councilors are struggling with an imbalance in representation and are looking at options to correct the problem.  Chaffey ward is the biggest ward by population and is represented by one councillor.

One option, championed by Councillor Tim Withey is an at large system that would see all councillors elected at large rather than by ward similar to the system used to elect district councillors.  Withey says the councilors would be responsible to the whole of the town and not just a single ward and would attract quality candidates.  Withey also says the system could be easily set up and cost virtually nothing to change.

Another option for consideration is to hire a consultant and redraw ward boundarys.

Both will be discussed at the next council meeting on Monday  Oct 15 at 1pm.
